Blackthorn has the feeling of a hedgerow at its fullest. Hawthorn blossom crosses thorny branches while daisies, tulips and green leaves fill the dark ground beneath. On this square birch-veneer tray, John Henry Dearle's 1892 design spreads across the tabletop almost like a small decorative panel.

Abundance held in balance

Dearle filled Blackthorn with botanical detail, but he did not let it become unruly. A strong central symmetry gives the flowers and thorny stems their underlying order, so the eye can wander through the blossom and still feel the structure beneath it. That balance between richness and control is what gives Blackthorn its dark, assured beauty.

Blackthorn across the square

The square tray lays Blackthorn out as a broad field of blossom, leaves and thorny stems. Seen from above, the eye can follow those details across the surface while the tray carries cups or small dishes; left on the table, the dark garden remains completely visible.

Blackthorn on the table

Set the tray on a table or sideboard and Blackthorn brings its dense hedgerow of blossom, thorn and dark foliage into the room before there is anything to carry.
